| About 3 months ago we bought a rescue mare with cancer. She was already showing signs of compromised breathing from the tumors in her nostril and farther up in her sinus cavity. We knew it was a gamble because Sassy was already pretty far along in her pregnancy. Could we keep her comfortable long enough to have the baby and nurse it for a couple of months or would the strain of the birth kill her right away?? Well I decided the worst then taking that chance was to think of this poor mare going through a sale, being terrified and only ending up at the slaughter house. So far so good.. on February 19th in the wee hours of the morning. Sassy delivered a gorgeous palomino filly by herself with no problems. So far she had survived the actual foaling.. now can she nurse it for a couple of months?!? As of today.. less then a week later.. Sassy is holding her own. The tumors continue to spread through her sinuses, now in both sides of her nose and just yesterday I am seeing some in the lower lids of her eyes. We are just trying to make it a few more weeks and praying Sassy can hold on. As of now she doesn't seem to be uncomfortable and is eating well and running with her filly. If at any point we think she is suffering she will be put to sleep and we will hand raise Bailey. So introducing Bailey.. the miracle foal. |
