Tragically we lost Butterfly on March 8, 2007.
Butterfly was attacked by another horse for no apparent reason. We have not been able to make any sense to this unprovoked attack. This was just a horrible case of Butterfly being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We aren't sure what set off the other horse but for some reason he attacked and attacked hard. Butterfly survived for 2 days before the real damage that was done was known. We saved Butterfly from going to slaughter but we couldn't save her this time. We had no choice but to end her pain and let her go peacefully. She was humanely euthanized and is now buried on the farm in the field next to her pasturemates.
Run free sweet girl!!
Butterfly was saved from going to slaughter. She was given to the meat dealer in town because the previous owner had accidently caused her to lose her right eye and they no longer wanted her for their children. When I bought Butterfly her eye was still intact although it had atrophied and the only part left in her eye was all the optic nerves which were all exposed and causing a great deal of pain. We had the vet removed the rest of the eye and suture it shut permentantly.

After a very short recovery Butterfly became a perfect little pony for the kids. I can put any kid on her at any ability and Butterfly will babysit them. If the kid is a complete beginner then it is almost like Butterfly tip toes around for them. If the kid is more advanced then Butterfly will do anything that is asked of her. She is currently being leased to some beginner kids learning to ride. For this purpose she is worth her weight in gold to us. Once she is no longer being used for children she will be retired and brought home to live out her days. She will never be sold again. She has earned a spot here for life. She will come home to live in our field and be a pampered pet.
This is my favorite photo of Butterfly and Sydney. Neither one knew anything about jumping but they learned together. Butterfly completely trusts Sydney and will do anything that kid asks of her. This was taken after a week of learning to jump. Not bad for 2 beginners.
Butterfly shortly after we got her Summer of 2003
Butterfly May 2006
You can see from this picture her right eye that is missing.
Butterfly jumping June 2006
That is me jumping and not in very good form I might add but Butterfly looks very cute over the jump for an inexperienced 20+ year old pony.
Butterfly packing around another beginner, Mikayla. She was leased for awhile for this kid who has moved on to something more experienced. Now Butterfly is teaching 2 more kids how to ride. Butterfly would be very bored without the kids to play with her. She looks for the kids at the gate in the afternoons. Maybe it is because the kids always have treats in their hands but they like to think she is happy to see them.
