I really wanted to update Piper's page with some stacked pictures of my beautiful girl but fate would have a different twist on us. On Wednesday December 14th the dogs managed to knock a hole open in the fence and all the dogs got out. When I called for them, all of them came back but Piper.

I went looking for her and found her laying in the ditch beside my driveway. I could see the blood but didn't know where it was coming from. I knew right away she had been hit by a car. She was trying to drag herself up to the driveway but couldn't move. Somehow I managed to carry her to the driveway where I called for my daughter to bring me a blanket ASAP. She was in shock and I had serious doubts that she would live for the 20 minute ride to her vets. It was touch and go on the trip there but I managed to keep her awake by talking to her the whole time.

At the vet we were able to stabilize her although she had lost a lot of blood and was in shock and her gum color was very pale. Once we got her stabilized and back to a normal pink color we were able to exam her wounds. There was a large laceration on her back leg where it looks like someone had taken a filet knife and just pulled back that whole area. We put her under and the vet sutured the area back together and then we went in for X-rays. Amazingly the pelvis and rear legs weren't broken only bruised.
Piper stayed at the vet for a few days because I was scheduled to go to Conneticut to take red collared puppy to her new home. I got a call on Thursday afternoon telling me they had X-rayed her front leg because it had started to swell and it had a  break in both lower bones. Luck was with her again and there was no displacement of the bone so we were able to splint the leg with strict instructions that she was to be confined and quiet for the next 6 weeks. (ever try to keep a 4 month old puppy quiet that long?!)

It has been a week and although she is battered and bruise she is alive and I couldn't be happier. Chances are she will never be the beautiful show dog that I had hoped for but the fact she is still with me is worth anything that a ribbon could give me. She continues to amaze me with her spirit and how she is taking all of this in stride. She is now able to stand on her own and can actually take a couple of steps once she figures out how to manuever the cast on her front leg. Her wonderful attitude has never changed and I couldn't ask for a better patient. I see her mom's sweet disposition in her in every move she makes.

Although I hate that this happened it sure has changed my perspective on her. All I ever wanted was to breed a Great Dane that would wow the judges in the ring. Now all I want is for her to recover and become a functional member of our family. She is home for life for better or worse. With her zest for life we do have hopes she will continue to thrive and make a full recovery.. if not we have a wonderful pup to have and love. For that we thank god and are grateful.

Many, many thanks to all the support and prayers she has received since the accident. Special thanks for her Okie friends, her friends at Shady Creek Danes, and her friends from Whippet World whose thoughts and prayers helped us all through this time!

Equiss Turbo Pie D Piper
"Piper"
Piper meets her new Crested friend Monkey. Many times I find him asleep across her. I think she is happy to have the company.
Piper on 12/20/2005, the day after her 2nd surgery to have a drain placed in her back leg. Again she is taking it in stride.. she just hates her special hat she has to wear.
